On Friday, December 9th, PHSS welcomed families, people supported, neighbours, ministry and political leaders, councillors, partners, and staff to our open house to celebrate the introduction of four community homes to the Ottawa area. Following the event, guests were invited to tour the three other Ottawa homes to gain an insight on the supports and services being offered in the area.
PHSS was honored to receive video greetings on behalf of Minister of Health, Sylvia Jones, and Peter Fragiskatos, MP, London North Centre.
For over 34 years, PHSS Medical and Complex Care in Community has supported individuals with complex medical needs. This in-community support is provided in their own homes, allowing individuals to live in community versus institutional settings.
“We’re excited to now be providing support in four homes in the Ottawa Region,” explains PHSS President and CEO Brian Dunne. “We expanded into Ottawa after being approached by families looking for in-community support for their loved ones. They wanted their family member to have some independence, sharing a home with a roommate instead of living at home with their parents. However, the support options in Ottawa were limited.”
“We toured Ontario looking for service providers who could offer more independence for our daughter,” says Alan Perks. “When we learned about PHSS and their unique approach to providing in community care, we were prepared to move our daughter to London so she could gain the independence she desired with the support she needed.”
“We were overjoyed when Brian and the PHSS team worked with us to create supports in Ottawa, so we could continue to live near our daughter. It was a complex journey of securing government funding, creating a purpose-built home (with the support of Theberge Homes), and developing her care plan.”
Since 2019, PHSS has expanded to providing support in four community homes across the Ottawa Region. Knowing there is a large demand for more in-community supports for people with complex medical needs, PHSS is working to further meet the needs of individuals and families in the region.
